What Is a Sebaceous Cyst?
A sebaceous cyst (also called an epidermoid or pilar cyst, depending on type) is a closed sac beneath the skin, typically slow-growing and painless. They commonly form on the face, neck, scalp, back, or torso, usually where a hair follicle or gland has become blocked. Most sebaceous cysts are benign, but they can become tender, inflamed, or infected over time.

Do I Need My Cyst Removed?
Not every cyst needs to be removed – many can simply be monitored. You might consider having a cyst assessed and removed if:
- It's growing or changing in size.
- It's causing pain, tenderness, or discomfort.
- It has become infected or inflamed.
- It's in a location where it catches on clothing or is otherwise bothersome.
- It's affecting your confidence or you'd simply prefer it gone.
A GP consultation is the right first step to confirm what you’re dealing with and discuss whether removal is a suitable option.
Our Cyst Removal Process
- Assessment - your GP examines the lump to confirm it's consistent with a cyst, rather than another type of lesion, and discusses your options.
- Local anaesthetic - the area is numbed before the procedure begins.

- Closure and dressing - the wound is closed, generally with sutures, and a dressing is applied.
- Aftercare and follow-up - you'll receive clear aftercare instructions, and sutures are typically reviewed and removed at a follow-up appointment.
Some cysts, particularly if infected, may need a different initial approach, such as drainage before full removal can be considered. Your GP will explain the most appropriate plan for your specific cyst.
Recovery and Aftercare
- Mild tenderness, swelling, or bruising around the treated area in the first few days is normal.
- Keeping the area clean and dry, as instructed, supports healing.
- Sutures are generally reviewed and removed within 1–2 weeks, if not dissolvable.
- Contact the clinic if you notice increasing pain, redness, swelling, or discharge, as these can be signs that need review.
